Great holidays...
Which was your best holiday?
I love Mexico travel. The people are so warm and laid back. If they say they'll be somewhere at 12, they might be there at three if you're lucky.
And the best hotel you've stayed in?
Having spent 20 years staying in hotels, what's important for me is the people who run them. I prefer to stay in small places where the service is much more personal. My favourite hotel is probably the Talbot Heirs in Memphis - a funky little hotel popular with musicians.

What do you need for your perfect holiday?
Obviously being with a loved one is important - and just being somewhere where I'm able to switch off.
What do you always take with you?
A sense of humour on Mexico travel.
What's your best piece of travel advice?
Don't drink too much alcohol on the plane, especially on long flights. I used to always overdo it during my drinking days. I've been teetotal for five years.

Where do you want to go next?
I love Provence, and that's top of my list. I much prefer that inland, rustic part to the glitzier, supposedly glamorous spots such as Nice or Cannes. I love the people and the food.
...and disasters?
Which was your worst holiday?
It would have to be Thailand in 1985. I ate the wrong thing, had an upset stomach and just had a truly awful holiday. It was a nightmare.
And your worst experience on holiday?
I remember going on a journey to Taipei years ago. It should have taken four hours but it ended up taking two days. Every mode of transport I took seemed to blow up or just not be up to the job.

What's the biggest packing mistake you've made?
Picking up someone else's bag in Senegal. The thing about bags these days is that they all look the same. A four-hour drive later, in the middle of the jungle, I learnt my mistake when I opened it to discover a couple of dresses and an off-the-shoulder number!

Which is the worst hotel you've stayed in?
I've stayed in far too many bad hotels over the years to single one out. About 3,000 come to mind, if I'm honest. I've got a long list of hotels I don't want to go back to, and I suspect I'll be adding to the list soon.
What do you avoid on holiday?
Package holidays. I prefer to go off the beaten track and do my own thing, although my stomach has had to put up with quite a lot as a result.....
