Dec. 4--TORONTO--Western New Yorkers soon may be able to get discount flights to London from Toronto.

Sir Richard Branson, the flamboyant multimillionaire chairman of British-based Virgin Atlantic Airlines, dropped into Toronto last week -- clad in Virgin Airlines hockey gear -- to announce his plans for a new, trans-Atlantic service from Toronto that is expected to be given regulatory approval next summer.

Branson -- whose company also owns music and book stores, financial outlets, energy companies, advertising concerns and car shops among other enterprises -- said the Toronto-London discount flights would offer cheap airfares and may include a "super jumbo" plane with an on-board Jacuzzi, casino and sleeper cars with double beds.

Lawrence MacDonald, national marketing manager for Sears Travel in Toronto, said Branson's track record has been to come into a market with "a very aggressive pricing strategy, which might make it worthwhile for Western New Yorkers" to come up to Toronto when flying to Britain.

That, combined with pricing in Canadian dollars, would make it "very attractive" for border-area Americans, he said. However, "there are already lots of foreign flights coming into and out of Toronto."

Currently, a round-trip ticket from Toronto to London costs around $300 (U.S.) for a charter flight and about $640 on a commercial airline like British Airways or Air Canada.

Branson also said he is interested in launching a discount flights Canadian domestic airline, if he can get permission from the Canadian government. Air travel is one of the few industries to still have government protection from free trade competition. Since merging with Canadian Airlines, Air Canada is the only major carrier for domestic flights.

While other regional airlines are seeking to fill the gap left by Canadian Airlines, the Canadian government has signaled it will not relax Canadian ownership requirements for domestic carriers any time soon.
