Jul. 26--With only one week to go before its inaugural flight to Las Vegas is scheduled to touch down, officials from Singapore Airlines are already looking toward the more-distant future.
The scheduled Aug. 2 launch of air service between Singapore and McCarran International Airport through Hong Kong is just the second North American destination the airline has added in the past decade. Still, the route is expected to play a pivotal role in the airline's strategy to expand its presence in the Western United States, Singapore Airlines spokesman James Boyd said Thursday.

"There are so many attractions in this region that we'd like to promote in Asia, from Yosemite National Park to the Grand Canyon," Boyd said. "Las Vegas is a unique and a fantastic destination, but it's just one part of our plan to upgrade our presence in the west."

Next year, the airline is scheduled to launch two new trans-Pacific routes offering 18-hour nonstop flights from Singapore to Los Angeles and San Francisco. Planes traveling between those cities now must stop to refuel.
Before launching those nonstop routes, Boyd said the airline hopes its Las Vegas service will increase people's interest in traveling between its Southeast Asia base and the United States.

"We want Asians to know about all there is to do in this part of the world, and we hope American travelers would show an interest in visiting Asia as well," said Boyd, who added the airline has worked with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to promote the city overseas.
Singapore Airlines will join Japan Airlines as the only carriers to provide nonstop air service between Asia and the United States.

After halting its nonstop service to Las Vegas after last year's terrorist attacks, JAL has carried more than 25,000 passengers through McCarran during the first four months after it resumed service to Las Vegas on March 1. To capture its share of the Asian market, Boyd said his airline will offer introductory round-trip rates starting at $499 and provide expanded features on its aircraft.
On its Las Vegas flights, Singapore Airlines will introduce "SpaceBed," an oversized seat that allows passengers to sit upright as well as lie in their preferred sleeping positions. Although the service has been used since June on aircraft serving the airline's Singapore-London route, Boyd said it was previously unavailable on flights to and from North America.

Over the next year, Singapore Airlines plans to spend an estimated $100 million to install the special seats on more than 45 aircraft serving long- and medium-haul destinations. In addition, aircraft traveling to and from Las Vegas will also feature a fiber-optic entertainment system that provides passengers with increased access to movies, television programs, digital music recordings and video games, Boyd said.

"We've replaced the older VCRs with a server that allows for up to four times the entertainment content that what we provided before," Boyd said. "It required a lot of investment, but we're bringing our newest and best products to this market."

Boyd said the airline expects most passengers who fly its Las Vegas route will be leisure travelers. He could not disclose how many advance tickets have been sold to and from Las Vegas, although he said the airline is "encouraged" by the route's initial sales and hopes to offer daily service in the near future.
