1/31/2005 American Airlines: 2004 record year for American Airlines in Miami; 17 million passengers travel through the Miami hub, one million more than last year(C)1994-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD RDATE:01282005 Miami - American Airlines carried more than 17 million passengers through Miami International Airport (MIA) in 2004, a record high for American and about one million more passengers than the previous year, the airline reported today. CHEAP FLIGHT TO MIAMI The carrier's cargo operations transported more than 300 million pounds of freight and handled more than 60 million pounds of mail to and from the Miami hub, up 7.8 percent and 9.4 percent respectively, from 2003. CHEAP FLIGHT TO MIAMI American marked 25 years of service at MIA in 2004 and celebrated the 15th anniversary of its Miami hub. American Airlines is the largest carrier at MIA, and its hub has become the nation's number one international gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean. Last year, American added service to five new nonstop destinations from Miami -- Guanacaste, Costa Rica; Manchester, England; Montevideo, Uruguay; St. Lucia, British West Indies; and St. Kitts/Nevis, Leeward Islands. Service to Bermuda begins this spring. CHEAP FLIGHT TO MIAMI Also, to strengthen South Florida's competitive position and to ensure that MIA remains one of the nation's most important gateways, American recently implemented a new simplified approach for domestic ticket pricing at MIA. "In just 15 years, we have developed a large international hub in the U.S., with an impressive international network designed to drive prosperity and growth in South Florida," said Peter J. Dolara, American Airlines' Senior Vice President for Miami, the Caribbean, and Latin America. "We provide a range of convenience that only a global airline can offer, and by offering access to great airfares, we are giving travelers even more reasons to select Miami as their air-travel gateway." The North Terminal project at MIA is beginning to show tangible benefits for passengers. Last year, American operated nine new gates in Concourse D, offering passengers the added convenience of flight connections within the security areas. CHEAP FLIGHT TO MIAMI Two more gates will open this year, for a total of 11 new gates in Concourse D. During the past 15 years, American has also become a powerful economic engine in Miami-Dade County; it is one of the area's largest private employers, providing nearly 9,000 jobs.
