Officials warn of online ticket scam -- Say sites stole credit info, cash

Four Web sites advertising cheap airline tickets scammed would-be travelers out of credit card information and cash, according to authorities.

The Web sites - identified as busysky.net, cheapclouds.com, cra-zytickets.net and submitprice.net - advertise inexpensive airfares.

When buyers entered their credit card information, the site said it could not process their credit card and requested a wire transfer.

In addition to sharing their credit card information, unsuspecting travelers who wired the money never received tickets, according to an e-mail warning sent by Passaic County Sheriff Jerry Speziale.

Only two of the four Web sites worked Monday.

Such scams are inexpensive and easy to set up, said Bradley Gross, an attorney and Internet fraud expert in Florida.

"It is another unfortunate consequence of e-business and the Internet that it doesn't take much to make a scheme seem elaborate even though it's not," he said.

"You can bounce e-mails from server to server. You can really within a matter of hours make it seem like a global or international operation when really it could be a kid in a basement that happened to hook up with Internet in several locales."

Setting up a Web address costs as little as $10, and routing e-mail through Internet service providers around the globe makes it difficult for law enforcement to track down and prosecute the scammer.

"We're finding more and more with our Internet scams that several countries are involved," said Jen Schwartzman, spokeswoman for the Federal Trade Commission.

"It is surprisingly easy, and we are working a lot with Internet service providers to try and crack down on some of these things."

The airfare scam Web sites are registered to individuals in New York, Virginia, California and England.

The registrations listed disconnected or incorrect phone numbers. E-mails sent to the registrants were not returned.

Further, the e-mail addresses were registered in England and Bulgaria.

Crazytickets.net was registered to Arlene Sugano of Irvine, Calif. The Internet registration incorrectly listed Sugano's phone number. The e-mail address with the domain traced back to London, and from there to Bulgaria.

Reached by phone, Sugano said she had never heard of the site.

"Why is my name on there?" Sugano asked. "I have no idea about anything regarding this Web site. I have nothing to do with it."

Wary buyers can lessen their risk by checking on vendors through Web sites operated by the Better Business Bureau at bbbonline.com, the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov and the online company Trust-e at truste.com.

Speziale was not involved in the investigation of the sites, but publicized information sent to him by other law enforcement agencies, said Passaic County Sheriff's Department spokesman Bill Maer.... COMPARE CHEAP DISCOUNT AIRFARE TICKETS HERE /cheap airfare home
