As Spain's economy has blossomed, so has the number of Spanish tourists with "new money" in search of the latest vacation adventure: the United States. With four to six weeks of vacation every year and a greatly improved standard of living, the average Spaniard has plenty of time and money to spend. Effective Oct. 1, 1991, Spaniards, like most of their Western European neighbors, will be granted a visa waiver for tourist travel. Numbers of visitors will increase even further.

Travel industry sources report that these modern-day Spanish explorers outspend other European tourists. On the average, Spanish tourists are the youngest in Europe, between the ages of 18 and 45, and relatively well-educated. They tend to be conspicuous consumers. Rather than looking for a bargain, they seek the best the United States has to offer. They do not hesitate to charge trips and purchases if they lack ready cash.

U.S.-bound Spaniards come principally from the Madrid and Barcelona areas, followed by Bilbao and Valencia. Most travel with family members, but a growing number join larger groups. Travel clubs, "packages," charter flights, and incentive travel (sometimes involving as many as 2,000 travelers at a time) are becoming a new Spanish phenomenon. Business travel is also increasing as bilateral trade continues to grow.

All forms of educational programs, from summer classes in English to master's degrees in business administration, are also in big demand as the overwhelming Spanish response to our recent STUDY USA trade fair in Madrid clearly demonstrated.

Thus, while New York, Florida, California, and Puerto Rico are the primary destinations of first-time Spanish visitors, return visitors usually prefer dude ranches, ski resorts, and campsites offered by our national parks.

While the Travel Center is supported by the United States Travel and Tourism Administration (USTTA), it is highly dependent on contributions from sponsoring members of the travel industry. In only two years, the Madrid Travel Center boasts 57 members, predominantly leaders in the travel industry. Included are ten state, city, and regional tourism offices; airlines; travel agencies; hotel chains; recreational entities (skiing and campgrounds); car rental agencies; cruise lines; theme parks; AmTrak; AT&T; and a travel publisher.
