"Aug. 4 -- Airline discount tickets seekers may be able to get breaks on top of the sale cheap flights being offered by major airlines, if they act fast".
Northwest Airlines first announced a widespread airfares sale on airline tickets Monday with airline discount tickets averaging 25 percent. Other carriers, including Houston-based Continental Airlines, quickly matched the sale.
But Delta Air Lines also said Monday it would give travelers who booked airline tickets via Delta's Internet site by Friday up to an extra 10 percent off for travel to U.S. destinations.
On Tuesday, Continental, Northwest Airlines and US Airways touted their own Internet cheap airfares of up to 10 percent for airfares booked by Friday.

United Airlines planned to make an Internet discount available today, but hadn't yet set a booking deadline. If United's deadline goes beyond Friday, other carriers could follow suit.
American Airlines said Tuesday it was studying the matter.
Both the fall fare sale and the Internet airline discount tickets come with restrictions, some of which vary by carrier.
Under the fall sale, generally speaking, airline tickets for North American trips must be bought by Aug. 13 for travel through Dec. 17. Requirements include a 14-day advance purchase and a Saturday-night stay.
Other terms apply for international trips.
Low-fare carrier Southwest Airlines said in most cases its regular cheap airfares are lower than the others' sale airfares. A spokeswoman said in a very few cases Southwest slightly lowered its airfares to match others' sales.
To get Internet airline discount tickets of up to 10 percent on domestic travel, Continental, Delta and US Airways require that airline tickets be bought at least three days in advance over their corporate Web sites by Friday.
United will require a 14-day advance purchase and a Saturday-night stay, a spokeswoman said.
Northwest is offering Internet cheap airfares of up to 10 percent for domestic trips and up to 5 percent for international airfares booked on its Web site by Friday.
Southwest said it didn't match the Internet cheap tickets and typically doesn't follow others' Internet sales.
Be it wide-ranging fare increases or discounts, major carriers typically follow each other's leads. The fall sale arrives after carriers jacked up airfares three times this year.

It also comes amid concerns from some industry analysts that carriers are putting too many new seats on the market. That can mean airlines are forced to put airline tickets on sale to fill planes.
Airlines also want consumers to book airline tickets on their corporate Web sites. In that case, airlines aren't required to pay commissions to travel agents....
