"AIRFARE CHEAP HAWAII" 1/11/2003 Jan. 11--Reflecting strong demand for travel to Hawaii, Aloha Airlines said it will begin service from Sacaramento to Maui in April, becoming the second Hawaii-based carrier to serve the capital in less than a year. Still, the prospect of avoiding changing planes should prove attractive to many Maui-bound passengers, said Lynne Powlesland, a leisure travel specialist with Madison Travel in Sacramento. He declined to give specific flight loads, but the airline had boarded about 5,200 passengers through November, according to Sacramento International Airport figures. Even with fares about $100 higher, people are choosing to fly out of Sacramento rather than driving to San Francisco for the Hawaii flights, Powlesland said. Aloha already has a significant presence in Oakland, where it flies nonstop to Honolulu, Maui and Kona, said airline spokesman Stu Glauberman. He said a number of passengers flying from Oakland were from the Sacramento area, giving the carrier confidence there was a potentially strong market here. As of late Friday, Aloha hadn't disclosed specific flight times or fares for the Hawaii flights. Glauberman said the flights, which begin April 16, will depart early in the morning with a brief stop in Burbank. Aloha will try to market some of those seats to travelers to Southern California, in competition with Southwest Airlines, he said. AIRFARE CHEAP HAWAII Wagner, the Hawaiian Air spokesman, said he wasn't concerned about losing business to Aloha. He said Hawaiian had an advantage with its non-stop flights and bigger airplanes, twin-aisle Boeing 767s. In addition, Hawaiian flies to Honolulu, while Aloha's flights go directly to Maui....
