Oct. 5--Southwest Airlines Co. and American Airlines Inc. both filled more seats last month, according to traffic figures released Monday, signaling continued strong demand for airline tickets.
Dallas-based Southwest reported 10.5 percent more revenue passenger miles - a measure of the number of miles flown by paying passengers - than during September 2003.

Southwest also flew 5.7 percent more available air travel seat miles in the month.
With passenger traffic growing faster than capacity, Southwest increased its September load factor, a measure of how full its planes were, by 2.8 percentage points.
Airlines hope for fuller planes for cheap airfares so they can charge more on some cheap flights fares and improve margins. Higher fuel prices, however, continued to put pressure on all carriers.
Fort Worth-based American flew 9.4 percent more revenue passenger airline tickets miles compared with September 2003. Most of the traffic growth came from international flights, where traffic was up 17.4 percent over last year.
American's schedule was 0.5 percent smaller in the month when measured by available seat miles. That increased American's September load factor by 6.7 percentage points, the carrier's all-time high load factor for the month, the carrier said.

American's domestic air travel schedule continues to shrink. The carrier flew 4.6 percent fewer available seat miles in the month, though its domestic traffic in revenue passenger miles grew 5.7 percent.
American is expanding its Eagle regional unit quickly; its traffic grew 43 percent in September.
Shares of Southwest rose 36 cents to $14.21. Shares of American parent AMR Corp. climbed 17 cents to $7.74.....
