AIRLINE ADDS FLIGHTS TO MEXICO MEXICANA LAUNCHES SERVICE TO CANCúN AND PUERTO VALLARTA
Colorado vacationers looking to escape winter's chill for Mexico's sandy beaches and sparkling oceans - not to mention its margaritas - now have another way to travel south of the border.
Mexicana Airlines, hoping to cash in on a recent surge in demand for direct air service from Colorado to Mexico, recently launched scheduled nonstop flights from Denver to Cancún and Puerto Vallarta.

The carrier is now offering service twice weekly to both destinations and has adjusted schedules for its current nonstop flights from Denver to Mexico City. Fares for the new routes start in the mid-$400s, according to searches on the airline's Web site.
The move represents Mexicana's second foray into nonstop scheduled flights from Denver to resort destinations in Mexico. The carrier discontinued nonstop service to Puerto Vallarta and San Jose del Cabo in 2002, saying it couldn't compete with an abundance of charter airlines offering rock-bottom fares on the routes.
But demand in Denver has rocketed since then, and Mexicana said it can carve out a niche.

"The people from Denver are asking for these routes," said Mexicana spokeswoman Theresa Bravo.
The airline began chartered service to Puerto Vallarta and Cancún in May but switched to regularly scheduled flights in an attempt to ratchet up the competition against locally based Frontier Airlines and national giant United Airlines, both of which have added nonstop service to Mexican beach resorts in recent years.

"Obviously, Mexico is a very hot market," said Robert Polk, who heads travel agency Polk Majestic Travel Group in Denver. "It's not real surprising that Mexicana has jumped into the fray since Mexico is their home turf. They're making sure United and Frontier don't run off with it."
Mexicana will fly the Denver- Cancún route on Sundays and Thursdays and the Denver-Puerto Vallarta route on Saturdays and Tuesdays.
Mexico has become a popular destination for Colorado travelers who want to stay closer to home amid terrorism fears and economic uncertainty, travel experts said. With the U.S. dollar declining in value against many foreign currencies, many travelers also see Mexico as a cheap vacation spot.

"Cancún has become more popular in recent years because of the additional flights now offered there," said Scott Stephens, owner of ToGo Travel in Denver. "And right now the dollar is really weak in Europe, so that's not really as hot a destination."
Mexicana Airlines serves 52 destinations in North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. The carrier plans to offer the Cancún and Puerto Vallarta flights through winter and then assess whether to continue the service.....
